The
Reverend Dr. Dwight Crist Northington is the son of the late Oscar Lee and Ethel
Nancy Northington of Wheelwright, KY. Dr. Northington has four sisters and two
brothers, and a wonderful wife, Rebecca. He also has two beautiful daughters,
Bianca and Alisha, and two grandchildren, Aniya and Nukeil.
Dr. Northington graduated from Forest Park High School, Baltimore, MD in 1969, and enlisted in the
United States Navy during the Vietnam era. Shortly afterwards he was chosen to attend the United States
Naval Academy Preparatory School, graduating in 1971. Instead of pursuing an appointment to the
United States Naval Academy he enrolled at Morgan State University and graduated cum laude in May 1976,
with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology.
Immediately after graduation, Dr. Northington served as corporate executive for the Travelers
Insurance Co., Philadelphia, PA for six years. During this time, he united with Saint Paul's
Baptist Church, Conshohocken, PA. He later resigned his position as Senior Account Executive to
pursue his call to gospel ministry. Dr. Northington subsequently enrolled in the Eastern Baptist
Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, and graduated in 1985 with the Master of Divinity degree.
On December 1, 1985, the Saint Paul Baptist Church ordained Dr. Northington to the Christian
Ministry. In June 1986, he became the Pastor of the First Baptist Church of South Orange, New Jersey,
and faithfully served for more than five years.
Dr. Northington began his current pastorate in December 1991, when the Calvary Baptist Church,
Red Bank, New Jersey installed him as their new spiritual leader.
Shortly after his arrival, he graduated from Drew University in October 1993, with a
Doctor of
Ministry degree.
Dr. Northington is the past Moderator of the Seacoast Missionary Baptist Association
and is the past president of the Westside Ministerial Alliance. He truly enjoys teaching and is
currently an Adjunct Professor at New Brunswick
Theological Seminary. He previously served as an Adjunct Professor in the
Psychology Department at Brookdale Community College. He is also a retreat and seminar
leader throughout the state.
Dr. Northington is very active in community affairs and is dedicated to helping provide a good
education for all children. Having been a member of the Borough of Red Bank Board of Education he
faithfully supports all efforts to provide an equal education for all students.
Dr. Northington has nurtured progressive partnerships with community members,
business leaders, academia, and local health organizations that would enhance
efforts to improve the lives of area residents. He has provided forums for
discussion of social, economic, and political issues that affect our communities.
One of his special interest is the plight of the homeless, and substance abusers. He actively
engages with local and state agencies to determine ways to improve the unfortunate situations of
all disadvantaged individuals. His methods of helping others deal with societal demands are well
received throughout the area.
Most
recently, Dr. Northington was the recipient of a double lung transplant. This
miracle from God has given him more inspiration and energy to become an even
better servant.
He firmly believes regardless of the challenge, "that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose."
(Romans 8:28)
